Balloons and Ballet

I had the great fun of taking photos with two ballerinas recently. The shoots had totally different feels and each ballerina brought a very unique and dynamic energy to the session. Dancers are so wonderful to work with!

Keller-Raines Estate

This may be my favorite shoot of 2010. It was shot on Christmas Eve at a cabin on Port Madison. The theme was a set of travel-worn “old money” characters to reflect the true texture and character of the Keller-Raines family.

State Water Polo Poster

The idea for this came in a flash one morning, so I drew the design and some rough sketches out on the back of a receipt. I (Garrett) had been doing design work for the water polo team and everything I had thrown at them had been well-received. Thankfully, the decision-makers were into this idea as well, so I arranged the shoot during the following week, got the frames I needed in about 20 minutes (plus a handful of “safety” frames, just in case one of them didn’t fit the design well when put together), and had the poster finished within an hour of importing the RAW files from the CF card.

The main design goal was to have something high-impact, readable and attention-grabbing that could be photocopied on B&W.

Love it or hate it, it was gratifying to see the initial concept become a reality without having to cut any corners or mitigate details.

Keeping up with the Joneses

This shoot was constant catch-up. Catching up to the light as it faded, catching up to the toddler who continually ran away, and catching up with Bryant and Abrie, my cousins and lifelong friends.

Taking a good portrait requires knowing your subject.  It’s ideal to have time to get to know the client or model before a photo session, so the photographer has a feel for what is truly inside and how to best express it through images.  Time building a relationship is vital.

So when we were asked to take photos of a group of seventeen teenage girls during a one-hour period, we panicked.  How were we supposed to go through that process with each kid in that timeframe?  We arrived early, made lighting and location decisions, said a little prayer, and they arrived.

We had 3-4 minutes with each girl, on average, so the challenge was to get to know them, help them feel comfortable, and quickly start taking pictures that their parents would love and adore.

Thankfully, the girls helped each other out and were a delight to work with. Their church group leaders also helped move the operation along, resulting in a fun set of portraits that happened in a flash (get it, in a flash?).

The parent feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. If the parents are happy with how their beloved angels look on camera, we’re happy!

Polina & Jasper

We had fun with this two-session photo shoot.  The more traditional work happened during our day session, then I met them around midnight to take some slow-shutter and more ambient photos at the Pike Place Market.
